The proposed duplex renovation in Mohammadpur, Dhaka positions itself as an exercise in adaptive reconfiguration within fixed structural and infrastructural constraints, retaining the existing structural frame and plumbing network as a deliberate design framework rather than a limitation. Responding to the dense urban context and hot–humid climate, the project explores how modern luxury can emerge through spatial intelligence, environmental responsiveness, and material restraint. The duplex is reorganized along a vertical gradient of privacy, with public and semi-public functions below and private spaces above, while non-load-bearing partitions are selectively adjusted to enhance cross-ventilation, daylight penetration, and spatial continuity. Natural airflow is reinforced through aligned openings, permeable internal elements, and controlled visual connections, reducing dependence on mechanical systems. Daylight is modulated through reflective surfaces, light-toned finishes, and internal shading strategies that respect existing openings. A restrained material palette of locally available, cost-effective finishes—integrated with built-in furniture and precise detailing—constructs an atmosphere of calm, contemporary luxury defined by proportion, tactility, and light rather than excess. By minimizing demolition, preserving wet areas, and prioritizing passive performance, the project argues for transformation over replacement, presenting a replicable model for upgrading Dhaka’s existing urban housing stock through intelligent, climate-sensitive design.
